Tile Adhesive Types 1–4 Explained: Uses, Qualities & How to Choose (2026)

Not all tile adhesives are created equal. In India, tile adhesives are classified under IS 15477:2019 and EN 12004 into Types 1 through 4 — each engineered for specific tile materials, substrate conditions, and installation environments. Under IS 15477:2019, Type 1 adhesives suit small-format ceramic and clay tiles on cement substrates. Type 2 handles low-porosity vitrified tiles and wet areas. Type 3 covers large-format tiles, exterior walls, and demanding wet environments. Type 4 is heavy-duty for challenging substrates and the most demanding installations.
